Hi, I’m Ali!
Welcome to my food blog, Once Upon a Hangry!
What is Once Upon A Hangry about?
Once Upon A Hangry is all about eating healthy and staying healthy while living busy lives in this modern world.
I’ve discovered that food is one of the easiest things you can use every single day to create a healthy body and life you desire.
Food is our body’s source of fuel, energy, growth, and renewal. It only makes sense that we pay attention to what we put into our bodies everyday!
I focus on providing a variety of HEALTHY, QUICK AND EASY MEAL IDEAS AND RECIPES as well as various HEALTH & WELLNESS TIPS on this blog.
My philosophy on food is simple. Eat as much real, natural, whole-foods as possible for optimal health and wellness.
Highly processed foods are out and natural whole foods from earth are in!
I grew up eating fast food and processed food all the time. My parents worked long hours to provide for the family and didn’t always have time to make the kids home cooked meals. We would often order pizza, microwave TV dinners, go out and get McDonald’s or KFC. Looking back, I can’t believe I ate that way for so many years!
Then some time in my 20’s, I have developed a deep interest in health, and wellness. I had even given up eating meat and was a vegetarian/pescatarian for years. I had my nose in various holistic health books every minute of free time I had. I got into the Alkaline diet, blood type diet, other trendy diets, and even tried the Master Cleanse where the only thing you can have is a mixture of water, lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and maple syrup for 10 days straight! Mostly, I used myself as a guinea pig. Trying all sorts of supplements and vitamins, essential oils, herbal remedies, putting crystals in my water, you name it, I probably have tried it.
The biggest thing I struggled with for most of my life was my weight. I wasn’t obese, but I was always a little bit chubby, extra meat-on-the-bones. I wanted to get skinnier, but even through all the changes I made and diets I’ve tried, nothing seemed to work well enough to help me lose the excess weight. There would be times when I would lose a few pounds, but I would gain it right back. The problem was that nothing seemed to last.
Outside of the weight issue, I also had a slew of other problems I was dealing with on a daily basis:
- chronic migraines
- recurring eczema and random rashes on my body
- indigestion after almost every meal
- irregular bowels
- extremely low-energy
- mood swings
- joint pain/inflammation
- depression, and more.
Around 2013, I had given up on being “good” with food, or trying any new diets. I decided to indulge to the max. I was going to eat whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. Desserts and decadent rich foods galore! And oh boy, was that a bad idea!
I ballooned and went up to my highest weight ever at 162 lbs. And I felt terrible. All the issues I listed above seemed to be getting worse by the day.
At the end of that year, through some recommendations and getting into my nerd research mode, I found tons of great information that helped me understand how food really works. And how to get lean and healthy the right way.
The start and majority of my big shift has been through discovering the Paleo way of eating. I’ve found out about a few other methods that seemed to work extremely well for my body. Whole 30, Ketogenic, Bulletproof, and Intermittent Fasting, eating mostly low-carb and slow-carb foods.
Getting to know the difference between highly processed man-made modern foods vs. real food from nature was one of the key factors in my shift in eating habits and getting the results I had been seeking for years. It has also helped me get more in-tune with my body to recognize which foods worked well for my body and which foods didn’t.
Here’s a photo of me around the beginning of my dietary change and after losing 30 lbs.
Benefits of Eating Clean
Weight loss was definitely one of the big perks of eating clean, whole foods, but the other benefits I’ve experienced were truly incredible. All the chronic issues I have dealt with for so many years of my life virtually disappeared in a matter of months.
With food, I had dug myself into living in a body with poor health and weight gain, and with food, I got myself healthy and got rid of excess weight & ailments.
All the positive changes I’ve personally experienced is why I started this blog and it’s my hope that the information I provide here can make a positive impact on your life as well.
cheers to living vibrant & healthy lives!
